Catalyzing Transformation Through Forwards®
Authored by Tejal Patel Tarro
Retreats, or Forwards®, as we call them at half full, llc, hold a special place in my heart because I’ve experienced firsthand how powerfully they can catalyze transformation.
For those unfamiliar, a retreat is intentionally planned time away (ideally in a safe and inspiring setting) focused on wellness, personal growth, team development, or some combination. That may sound appealing, yet I’ve found that many people — myself included — can feel resistant to these journeys, which says a lot about our conditioned thinking and cultural expectations
Simply stepping away from our normal environment can be transformative. Familiar spaces tend to put our brains on autopilot, which can be useful for certain habits. Sitting at our workstations each day, for example, may reinforce a mindset of productivity, and that certainly serves a purpose. But sometimes we’re trying to solve more complex challenges, and the environment where we are productive may not be the same environment that inspires creativity.
A new setting can ease daily stress, lower inhibitions, and awaken our senses, which in turn opens us to fresh perspectives and new connections.

Just weeks before the COVID lockdown, my former business partner and I traveled to a place called Haramara in Mexico for what we called a partner’s retreat. We wanted to step away so we could take a higher-level perspective on our business in a setting that felt both exciting and rejuvenating. The beautiful jungle surroundings and outdoor living spaces awakened playfulness and creativity in both of us. That experience sparked possibilities for our business that we had never imagined before. As we would later discover, those shifts helped us thrive and grow during a time when many businesses were shutting down.
Beyond being in a new place, a retreat introduces the unexpected, interrupting the patterns of our normal thinking. While there may be a planned schedule, you never fully know what will unfold, which can feel both exciting and a little intimidating. An unusual exercise, a provocative prompt, a new conversation, or a period of solitary reflection may surface something within you that you had not seen before. These are the kinds of catalytic moments that rarely emerge in the familiar rhythms of daily life.
Most of our everyday conversations are task-oriented:
Where are you going?
What are you doing?
How are we going to get this done?
Whereas, retreats invite deeper personal questions such as:
Who are you?
Why are you here?
What are your deeper desires?
What is working, and not working, in your current way of being?
For teams, retreats create space to explore questions such as:
What do we truly value?
Are we genuinely aligned?
What do we need to start doing, and stop doing?
These are not easy questions to answer, and focused, extended time away increases the possibility that novel and profound insights will emerge — insights that may ultimately lead our lives in very different directions.
Experiences with Cascading Impact
I remember attending a retreat over 15 years ago amid a demanding career and raising two young boys. Though I could easily have found many excuses not to go, I felt there were big questions stirring within me — questions I couldn’t access in the whirlwind of daily life.

At that retreat, I participated in many exercises that stretched my comfort zone and spent a great deal of time reflecting, much of which I don’t even remember now. What I do remember is that it was there I realized my career was no longer aligned with what I was truly called and gifted to do. That realization launched what became a wild adventure into facilitation.
One of my favorite aspects of a retreat, and often the one that creates the greatest impact, is the intimate community that forms in a remarkably short time. Thoughtful facilitators intentionally cultivate a sense of safety and belonging among participants, many of whom begin as strangers. Through shared experiences and honest conversations, you come to realize that others carry many of the same dreams and struggles as you. Beneath the surface, we are often far more alike than we imagine. Over meals and breaks, conversations spark that can lead to new connections, friendships, and support.
Recently, I had the good fortune of attending our half full, llc, Flex Forward® experience, which brough together our larger facilitator ecosystem to build community, collaborate, and look forward together . Though I knew about half of the people there, many faces were new, and at first I wasn’t sure how I would fit in. But to my surprise and delight, within the first few hours I felt I had found kindred spirits.
The facilitators created a safe container that allowed us to express ourselves courageously through vulnerability. And when people show up fully as themselves, it becomes almost impossible not to create connection. Since that Forward® , I’ve stayed in touch with many of those new friends, and some of us are now supporting one another’s dreams in tangible ways.

I feel deeply blessed not only to have participated in many transformative retreats, but also to lead them. It is one of the greatest joys of my work, and one that comes with immense responsibility. It often feels like a balancing act…
Create enough structure to provide grounding, while leaving enough space for the unexpected
Cultivate deep trust and belonging, while honoring each person’s autonomy and unique experience
Shape something that feels safe yet expansive, magical yet practical, energizing yet replenishing
It’s a challenge, but one worth embracing, because breakthroughs, both small and large, are often the catalysts for meaningful change.
From Perspective to Action
But a breakthrough alone does not guarantee change. Transformation happens when we turn newfound insights into commitments through consistent action. And this is where community becomes essential — offering support, encouragement, and accountability. One of the beautiful things about working with half full, llc, is that we provide both the breakthrough experiences and the community support needed to move individuals and teams from insight into a new way of being and working.
Of course, resistance to retreats is common. I often hear, I’m too busy. I don’t have time to get away. And yes, we all have responsibilities and deadlines that feel urgent. But sometimes we need to prioritize what is truly important over what merely seems urgent. Well-being, growth, and alignment are deeply important, yet they often don’t feel urgent until they become a crisis. Isn’t it wiser to devote time each year to what matters most?

I also often hear that retreats can be too expensive, and on a personal level, I understand that challenge. While some destination retreats may feel inaccessible, there are local options, and even virtual ones, that can offer many of the same benefits at a lower cost. Some even provide scholarships. And many companies will support their team members in attending. For teams and organizations, it’s worth considering the well-being, growth, and alignment of your people. And if those feel stalled or strained, a thoughtfully curated retreat experience may be well worth the investment.
Sometimes our resistance to retreat isn’t really about time or money. Sometimes it’s about what might surface when the noise and distraction fall away.

Slowing down can confront us with truths we’ve been too busy to feel. We often avoid retreat because we sense it might change us, and staying with what is familiar, even if it no longer serves us, often seems preferrable to the difficult work of expansion. I have avoided, and in some places continue to avoid, change in my life. However, I have learned that the parts of me that feel most powerful, authentic and on purpose came from me doing the hard work of introspection and reckoning.
Retreats are not an escape from life; rather, they are a portal to return to it with more depth, meaning and clarity. They offer us the rare gift of stepping out of the noise long enough to remember what matters, reconnect to ourselves and each other, and listen for what is quietly asking to change. In a dynamic, technology-driven world that rarely slows down, choosing to pause, reflect, and realign may be one of the most courageous and transformative choices we can make.
What might become possible if you gave yourself, or your team, the space to step away, listen deeply, and realign with what matters most?
